Description
This is one of two surviving round towers in county Cork and the tower is one of the few surviving aspects of the old monastic foundation at Cloyne. The tower is one of the few surviving aspects of the old monastic foundation at Cloyne. The monastery was founded by St. Colman mac Lenene who died in 604. Built on a network of caves which are all but impassable it is rumored that in the penal days priests used a secret underground link from Cloyne House to the Catholic graveyard in order to say mass for the people. It was struck by lightening in 1748 - 1749 and the original conical roof was destroyed.
